Fifteen years. That’s how long it took Dr. Keith Alexander to invent the world’s safest trampoline. Through research and development, he reengineered its design to eliminate the impact points that are the cause of most trampoline injuries. His dedication and our belief that children deserve safe backyard play fuels our commitment to education and our passion for innovation and quality. Today, more than 20 years after the Springfree journey began, our mission remains the same. It is, quite simply, to change the definition of trampoline.
1934 - Invention of TrampolineGeorge Nissen invented the first spring-based trampoline in 1934. A gymnast himself, he was inspired by the safety nets used by circus trapeze artists and wanted to create something to help him train.
1964 - Holmes family springless trampolineSteven Holmes at the age of 2, who would become the CBO (Chief Bouncing Officer) of Springfree Trampoline, first experience on a Springless trampoline that his father hand built for the family backyard.
1992 - Keith wants to buy a trampolineIt was 60 years before any new significant innovation would occur in trampoline design. In 1992, Dr. Keith Alexander (a dad, and mechanical engineer) wanted to buy his kids a trampoline. When his wife gave an emphatic “no!” because they were too dangerous, he embarked on a mission to develop a completely redesigned, safer trampoline.
1993 - Early prototype designsKeith’s first two prototypes were very creative indeed! He created both an inflatable and drum design. The inflatable trampoline often leaked and the drum trampoline was very complicated to build. And neither was very bouncy. However, these early prototypes did inspire the idea of the SoftEdge on the Springfree Trampoline.
1997 - 1998 - The Springfree moment of truthThe first Springfree Trampoline came to life as a miniature model made from kebab sticks and the fabric mat was hand-sewn by Keith. This model was concrete proof to Dr. Alexander that the Springfree design could bounce but wouldn’t collapse. The first Springfree prototype was developed based on this design.
2002 - Keith meets SteveIn 2002 Keith met another dad, Steven Holmes. While Steve was impressed by what he saw, it wasn’t until his own daughters tried, and gave the trampoline an enthusiastic endorsement, that he was on board. Working together, they continued to innovate and improve the Springfree design until they were satisfied that they had eliminated most of the risks associated with traditional trampolines.
2003 - 2005 - Springfree Trampoline goes globalIn 2003 the first Springfree Trampoline was sold in New Zealand. The company continued to grow, entering Australia and Canada in 2004 and then the United States and the United Kingdom in 2005.
2010 - Product of the Year The Springfree Trampoline has earned multiple international awards for its design and innovation - including receiving the product of year award in both Canada and the United States.
Today - Worldwide growth in manufacturing and retailToday, you can purchase a Springfree Trampoline in over 15 countries! We are proud to employ over 300 people located in 6 countries, including our manufacturing team in China at a Springfree-owned and run factory.
