SoftEdge™ Technology
Over a period of twelve years, the Springfree™ Trampoline engineering team has created a unique soft-edge™ jumping system that has removed the traditional frame and spring system from the same height as the jumping surface.
The frame has been lowered, well away from the jumper, with all-weather fibreglass rods , which extend from this frame into an innovatve connector system at the edge of the mat. The rods are angled on two axis, tensioning the mat to provide bounce, while also creating a soft edge that is deflected on impact. Only Springfree™ trampolines have an edge soft enough not to require safety pads.
Tradtional trampoline manufacturers attempt to minimise the risk of impact injury by covering the springs and frame with padding systems. These systems present two major weaknesses:
- INADEQUATE PROTECTION: Even when covered with one-inch thick padding, an impact with the padded frame on a traditional trampoline will result in an impact force between 20 – 30 times greater than that generated by hitting the SoftEdge™ of the Springfree™ Trampoline. Independent tests show your child has a 90% chance of suffering a moderate* injury on a traditional trampoline that meets the current padding standards. The same tests show your child has virtually NO chance of incurring similar injury on a Springfree™ Trampoline.
- IMPERMANENT & EXPENSIVE: Padding systems tend to last between two to three years. With a replacement cost of around $150 – $250/tramp, many choose not to replace or maintain their pads, which poses additional risk to jumpers.
*Moderate injury is defined as skull trauma, brief loss of consciousness, fractures, deep wounds
Flexirod™ jumper support system
Springfree™ Trampoline pioneered the rod-based trampoline, the first and only alternative to the original 1930s (spring-based) design still sold by national retailers.
A range of alternative soft edge™ designs were prototyped by Springfree™ Trampoline during the early product development process, but none delivered the required performance elements. The final Springfree™ Trampoline pre-tensioned rod-based design delivered an improved bounce experience superior to conventional trampolines.
Flexinet™ enclosure system
Creating a SoftEdge™ trampoline removed the risks of injury caused by awkward landings on traditional trampoline springs and frame, but was only half of the solution. To create the world’s safest trampoline, Springfree™ needed to develop an enclosure system that kept people on the jumping surface without introducing any injurious elements. Enclosures used on conventional trampolines use rigid steel pipe as supports, which our engineers would not accept as a safe solution.
In keeping with the Springfree™ Trampoline design objective of removing such ‘impact zones,’ Springfree™ engineers developed the world’s first (and only) flexible enclosure system. The FlexiNet™ safety enclosure uses a patented flexible frame system that provides elastic flex in every possible direction, designed to gently re-direct wayward jumpers back to the centre of the trampoline. This means that when a jumper impacts the net, the whole enclosure structure, including the FlexiNet™ poles, changes shape for a soft, body-conforming catch. The poles move with the jumper—unlike traditional enclosures where the steel poles create a rigid barrier that can generate additional injuries.
The FlexiNet™ safety enclosure is fabricated using high strength ‘raschel’ knitted mesh, with a lock-stitch knitting method. Even if individual cells are cut, the net will not run or tear.
History of the Design
The Springfree™ Trampoline represents the first alternative design since the original invention of the trampoline by George Nissan over 70 years ago. It wasn’t an afterthought or an overnight commercial solution to a long established high risk product.
The Springfree™ Trampoline design was developed over a 12 year project through the efforts of an experienced mechanical engineer based at a leading university.
