Kidsafe is the leading non-government, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the prevention of unintentional childhood injuries and provides an information service for parents and carers of children on all aspects of child safety and injury prevention.

Injuries are still the leading cause of death in Australian children aged one to fourteen, accounting for nearly half of all deaths in this age group. More children die of injury than die of cancer, asthma and infectious diseases combined. There is still much more work to be done to reduce this shocking statistic.

In South Australia, the Kidsafe Centre is located in the Women’s and Children’s Hospital at North Adelaide. They provide an education, information and resource service on child safety and injury prevention at home, in the backyard, on the road, etc.

I’ve just returned from a girlie trip in Melbourne with my mum, my sister and her 7 month old daughter Tia.

Travelling with an infant we tried to avoid getting taxi’s as much as possible but there were situations when it just couldn’t be avoided.

To be completely honest, I never once thought about how babies travel in Taxi’s, I just assumed you could order cabs with restraints installed.

I was surprised to say the least when I discovered that child restraints were not mandatory and all you had to do was hold on to your infant when travelling.

Working for an innovative company where we have taken a 70 year old design, spent millions of dollars in research to come up with a Trampoline design that keeps your kids safe and ‘prevent’ injury, I am shocked that a public system so old in tradition is yet take the same type of initiative.

The Taxi industry is against the idea of mandatory restraints, saying that shared devices would be disease carriers that would put children’s health at risk.

Kidsafe Victoria President Mark Stokes called for a trail of overhead lockers in cabs to hold child safety devices as a solution.

What do you think about the making restraints mandatory? Have you ever had a bad experience in a cab with your children?

South Australian ‘ladies that lunch’ have again raised the profile (and cash) for child safety and injury prevention.

Named after the magnificent racing mare, Makybe Diva, Adelaide’s exclusive girls Diva Club was launched in 2007 to raise money for the Kidsafe SA branch.

The luncheon fundraiser has grown and is now Kidsafe SA’s most profitable fundraising event of the year, helping them to raise awareness for accidental child injury.

And their latest luncheon was no disappointment – with hundreds of raffle tickets sold to win an SF40 Springfree™ Trampoline. The ladies had their DIVA glare going when long time Kidsafe supporter, Jo Connolly won. Well not really, everyone was stoked for her, but let’s not ruin a good story.

Springfree™ Trampoline is very happy to be able to partner with Kidsafe as we both share a united vision – to keep children safe!

PARENTS are being warned about the dangers of children’s trampolines with the UK’s Kingston Hospital recording a surge in the number of youngsters treated for accidents caused by them.

In just five months, doctors at the hospital saw more than 130 trampoline-related injuries including wounds and fractures and several even needed surgery.

The recent research, carried out by consultant and clinical head for emergency medicine Dr Harris and senior staff nurse Marcus Wootton, revealed a fifth of the injuries were in children under five who had been playing on trampolines of more than 10 feet in diameter.

On average, more than two other people were on the trampoline with them, which Dr Harris said was even more dangerous for the lightest child, who would be five to 14 times more likely to be injured. In 68 per cent of cases the injured child did not even fall off the trampoline, the injury caused on the product itself or by collision.

This is due to ‘double bouncing’ – where people jumping at the same time causes the transfer of kinetic energy, catapulting the lightest person in to the air.
But it seems the injuries weren’t all the result of scientific phenomena – a third of accidents were the result of youngsters deliberately jumping from the trampoline or accidentally falling off it.

The doctors have called on retailers to brief parents on safety guidelines when selling the toys, which have grown in popularity over the past few years and are particularly popular in Kingston and Richmond, where homes tend to have bigger gardens.

There are many trampoline designs on the market and one would think safety would be the most important factor when purchasing a trampoline for the kids?<ins datetime="2009-09-30T14:07" cite="mailto:Valued%20Acer%20Customer"></ins>

For Springfree™ Trampoline this report is not new or surprising for that matter. Statistics have always demonstrated an unacceptable and scary number of childhood injuries, but what is surprising is that parents continue to purchase unsafe trampolines.

Springfree™ Trampoline has been on a mission since 2003 to reduce injury occurrence – and we’ll keep working hard to make backyards safer. We reckon, parents wouldn’t let their kids ride on a bike without a helmet or ride in a car without a seatbelt – so why let them jump on an unsafe trampoline?

Luckily the Springfree™ Trampoline was created!

When it comes to your children, you will move heaven and earth for their happiness and well-being. Yet what many parents fail to realise is that in the backyard, a hidden danger exists that hospitalises and can potentially cause serious injury to children – THE EL CHEAPO!

Traditional old-style trampolines cause a shocking 6,000 admissions to Australian hospitals each year, however International studies show only one in ten trampoline injuries result in a logged hospital visit – so statistically over 60,000 Australian children suffer some type of trampoline induced injury each year , the reasons are highlighted below.

Source: (QLD Injury Survey Unit, in Injury Bulletin #58, March 2000, Hockey, R & Miles, L).

Summary of Trampoline Injury Statistics
