Autism fund raiser gets a bounce

Jump for joy, the prize for the school which raises the most money on Dress Differently Day this year, will win… Drum Roll Please….. a Springfree™ Trampoline!

Autism Awareness month kicks off on 1 April with Autism Queensland’ Autism Awareness Day Barbeque and culminates on 30 April with Dress Differently Day.

SpringfreeJose_lowres

Every registered school hosting a Dress Differently Day event or selling Autism Queensland merchandise will go into the draw for a range of prizes. But the school to raise the most money will get a Springfree Trampoline, the World’s Safest Trampoline worth $945 and a Footprints Book Voucher.

The Springfree ™ Trampoline is the only design that has removed all the traditional impact areas that cause equipment induced trampoline injuries – steel springs and hard edges.

Autism Queensland CEO Penny Beeston said demand for Autism Queensland’s services was up 40 percent from 10 years ago.

“We know that 1 in 160 children have a diagnosis of Autism, and we’ve seen a real increase in the demand for our services right across Queensland,” she said.

“Autism Queensland receives government support but we also rely on donations from the community to make Autism information, support and outreach programs accessible to all Queenslanders.”

Ms Beeston said Autism Queensland was the only organisation to provide Autism specific Outreach Programs into all schools in Queensland, whether they are State, Independent or Catholic schools.

“Money raised will fund education and therapy for children with Autism; information services to support families and professionals as well as supporting our Outreach Programs, ” she said.

Individuals or groups can take part in Dress Differently Day by registering online at www.dressdifferently.org.au or by calling the Autism Queensland fundraising team on (07) 3273 0000.

Some (cheap) ideas to dress differently include:

  • put your clothes on backwards or inside out
  • put your socks on after your shoes
  • teachers could wear the school uniform to school
  • get the old Superman costume out of mothballs

Who do you turn or switch on to first for advice?

Reading the article in the Herald Sun about Generation Y turning to the internet for advice rather than seeking their community help, I wondered if this was only limited to Gen Y?

This study only looked at 18-24 year-old parents but with sites such as Essential Baby, Kidspot & Parenting Australia many parents no matter their generation don’t need to travel far from the couch for quality advice from experts and support from other parents.

What I did find surprising from the study was that three quarters of parents believed there was not enough support for young parents. With the world of knowledge and like-minded parents at their fingertips my questions is what type of support are they missing? Maybe that’s where community groups should step up to plate?

If you have a parenting concern or question, who do you turn to first?

Easter Treats

Undefined

Roaming through Woolworths last night, thinking of all the better things I could have been doing with my time (did I tell you I hate Grocery Shopping?) there was a little excitement in my Monday Shopping Routine. …The Easter egg aisle and the pure abundance of chocolate! That’s until I saw the price tag! All I craved was a small packet of chocolate eggs but couldn’t justify the price so I went with a small Choc block instead. Boring…

So it was no surprise to read the article in the Courier Mail explaining that the ingredients’ prices are at 20 to 30-year highs worldwide and manufacturers are passing the increases straight on to consumers.

Easter

As a result, popular treats, such as Red Tulip elegant rabbits have jumped 22 per cent in price – from $4.48 to $5.50, while Pink Lady bilbies have risen from $5.50 to $6.45 – a 17 per cent hike.

So there is no better time to get the kids in the kitchen and make your own Easter treats right?

Taste.com has some great ideas for DYI Easter including these divine chocolates.

Fiji or Heaven….

Our Surprise Engagement Dinner!

As most know I have just returned from heaven. Oh I mean Fiji. Parents I can not recommend the destination enough for a wonderful family holiday!  Everyone said Fijian’s love children but you don’t really realise it until your there.  I went to Fiji with my Boyfriend (came back with my Fiancé – yes I got engaged over there!!) and my sister and her husband and their 4 month old baby girl. We stayed at an Australian owned Island, Castaway Island (http://www.castawayfiji.com) and it was something from a postcard.  We couldn’t have asked for better weather and our days consisted of and only of…

  1. Sleeping
  2. Eating
  3. Reading

We made very good friends with a lady name Aseri, the Kids Club and Activities Coordinator.  She only had 20 kids at the time (off-peak) but she was telling us that they get up to 100 kids at one time!! After explaining what they got up to I even wanted to join the kids club.  They take them on day trips to Treasure Island, go frog hunting, teach them traditional Fijian song & dance and much more.  Sounds fun huh? We had such a great time; we have decided to get married at Castaway Island…. Oh until then….. On the way back home, we passed a little village and guess what I saw? I Springfree™ Trampoline!!!  I almost jumped out of my skin with excitement!  I tried to get a photo but the not-so-friendly bus driver wouldn’t turn around. Have you been to Fiji? Where do you recommend going with kids?
